Flail Mower

A flail mower is a type of powered garden and agricultural equipment designed for cutting heavier grass, brush, and small saplings that ordinary lawn mowers cannot handle. It uses a horizontal rotating drum to which many small blades, called flails, are attached. As the drum spins at high speed, the flails swing outward by centrifugal force and strike the vegetation, cutting it into small pieces. This design makes the flail mower especially suitable for rough, uneven ground and for areas with stones or debris, where other mower types might be easily damaged.Unlike rotary mowers, which use one or a few rigid blades, a flail mower’s flexible flails can retract when they hit a hard object. This reduces the risk of serious damage to the machine and helps improve safety by minimizing the chance of large projectiles being thrown. The cut material is usually finely shredded and spread evenly across the ground, where it can decompose and return nutrients to the soil. This mulching effect is valuable for maintaining pastures, roadside verges, orchards, vineyards, and overgrown fields.Flail mowers are commonly mounted on tractors, compact tractors, or skid-steer loaders and are powered through a power take-off shaft or hydraulic system. Many models are designed for three-point hitch mounting and can be adjusted for different working widths and cutting heights. Some units feature offset or side-shift capability, allowing the operator to reach under fences, around trees, or along ditches while keeping the tractor safely on more level ground. There are also flail mowers suitable for smaller properties, which can be attached to all-terrain vehicles or compact utility machines. The flails themselves come in different shapes, such as “Y” blades or hammer flails. “Y” blades are often preferred for grass and light brush, providing a clean finish. Hammer flails are heavier and more robust, better suited for dense vegetation, weeds, and woody material. The choice of flail type and mowing speed allows the operator to balance cutting quality with working efficiency. Regular inspection and replacement of worn flails are important for maintaining good performance and preventing imbalance in the rotor.Because of their versatility and durability, flail mowers are widely used by municipalities, farmers, landscape contractors, and property owners who need to manage challenging vegetation. They can handle tasks such as clearing overgrown trails, maintaining firebreaks, controlling roadside growth, and managing cover crops. Their ability to cope with uneven terrain, tall grass, and scattered debris has made them a preferred solution when normal finishing mowers or brush cutters are either unsafe or ineffective.
