Professional‑grade chainsaws are relatively light, powerful, and easy to transport, making them suitable for thinning, pruning, and felling individual trees where large machines cannot operate. Safety equipment such as protective clothing, helmets, and anti‑kickback features are essential parts of chainsaw‑based work.Skidders are used to drag or “skid” logs from the stump to a landing area. They may have wheels or tracks and are equipped with winches, cables, or grapple arms. While skidding can be more damaging to soil than forwarding, it remains common in many areas due to its versatility and lower initial investment. Modern skidders aim to reduce ground pressure and often use planned skid trails to limit environmental impact.In addition to primary harvesting equipment, there are many types of support machinery. Feller‑bunchers cut and gather trees into bundles for later processing. Chippers and grinders reduce branches, tops, and small trees into wood chips or biomass fuel. Mulchers and brush cutters are used for site preparation, vegetation control, and maintaining forest roads and firebreaks. Loaders and cranes handle logs at roadside landings, while specialized trucks transport timber to sawmills and processing plants.Recent developments in forestry machinery focus on automation, digital control systems, and sustainability. GPS‑based navigation, onboard measuring systems, and data collection tools help operators plan operations more accurately and document harvested volumes. Hybrid powertrains and more efficient hydraulic systems aim to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
